SENG’s History: Changing Lives, Changing Futures!

Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG), was founded in 1981 by professor James T.Webb, following the suicide of a gifted young adult. In the movie embedded here, Dr. Webb shares his story exclusively for SENG Europe. The video was filmed in July of 2018, just days before Dr. Webb unexpectedly passed away.

Every day people work hard to provide support and understanding to gifted individuals and their families. We donate time, money and expertise so our communities in the diversity of European countries can better serve the social and emotional needs of gifted. We do this every day because it is needed. You can read more about our mission and vision below.

Summary Business Plan SENG Europe

SENG Europe is a newly founded Dutch based NGO aiming to support the emotional needs of the gifted community at large throughout Europe, through the spreading of up to date information pertaining to the emotional needs of the gifted, offering trainings and webinars, organizing both international (European) and local conferences and offering a platform for the international gifted community to connect. Though there are other organizations serving the needs of the gifted in various roles and capacities, SENG Europe is unique in it’s mission to specifically address the emotional needs of the gifted. Moreover, it is the distinct goal to bring together the gifted in their cultural diversity with the intention to enrich any existing local gifted communities.

Organization

SENG Europe (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) is an independent Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in July 2018 in The Netherlands. SENG Europe is a nonprofit organization devoted to empowering families and communities to guide gifted, talented and twice exceptional individuals to reach their goals intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

Our Foundation consists of an internationally based Board of Directors and an Executive Director based in The Netherlands. All contribute their time and expertise on a pro bono basis. Since our founding in the summer of 2018, we have met several times live in The Netherlands and we hold monthly or bimonthly meetings online. Further, SENG Europe will also build on a strong volunteer community to prepare materials, run our newsletter, maintain our website and organize (local) events, trainings, and (mini) conferences. SENG USA also has the custom to work with liaisons, spokespersons that promote SENG’s mission and services. SENG Europe we will develop similar local representatives and alliances.

Services

Some of the services we will be offering are a monthly newsletter, (online) webinars and training, as well as (online) conferences. Together with our liaisons, we would also like to organize local mini-conferences and other relevant events. Additionally, we will organize SENG Model Parent Group (SMPG) facilitator trainings. As well as building a database of professionals around Europe who can provide local services and gifted support in your community. Further, SENG Europe is developing some new ideas for the European Community.

Market & Collaborators

The main target market for SENG Europe is the gifted community at large in Europe. However, many services are also open to those who wish to learn more about the gifted for example because they work with them. Because the gifted can be found in all walks of life, different socio-economic and educational backgrounds, and of diverse cultural background, the demographics are in fact dispersed. Moreover, giftedness runs the entire life span, from infancy through old age making both services and marketing complex to target.

As the gifted are a minority group not unified by any clear demographics, there is need to facilitate connections across borders. In the context of European unity, there is potentially much to be learned from each other ranging from best practices for teachers to national legislation. Because support also has a basis in the community we perceive great value in sharing and learning from other cultures within the European Community. In this regard, SENG Europe sees great richness in the diversity.

Charity status & Marketing, Milestones

SENG Europe is a legal entity based in The Netherlands, governed by Dutch law. The legal form is a foundation, which means that SENG Europe will not have members, but rather, rely on benefactors, donors, friends of, and subscribers. SENG has made an application to obtain the Dutch charity status (ANBI), which places conditions [1] on types of activities and finances financial polic[2] y to which SENG adheres. The ANBI status is required in The Netherlands in order for benefactors to deduct any donations from their taxes.

Marketing is a topic that is frequently addressed in some form during our regular meetings. There will be ongoing development of both the organization and of content, fundraising activities, networking, translation and expanding website, revision payment structure. These activities will all be in line with the regulations pertaining to the charity status.

Finance

Apart from the investment of time by our volunteers, there are obviously also running costs that cannot be paid for in ‘natura’ as well as activities that often require professional to deliver a standard of quality. For these we need financial support. As a start-up NGO, SENG Europe received a small fund available to cover the bare essential start-up costs such as notary costs, website hosting and so on.

In terms of generating income independently, the primary source of income for SENG Europe is projected to be donations and both European and local grants and subsides. There are in fact many different types of subsidies and grants possible, both at a local level as well as European, and the European Community is a strong proponent of activities and organizations that unite European countries. Other forms of income generation are also being examined.
